2025 Pie Contest Winner

Terri Hickman won the Single and Double pie crust contest with her cherry and coconut cream pie.  She also won best overall!

 WEST VIRGINIA STATE FOLK FESTIVAL

COOKIE CONTEST---2026

Anyone wishing to enter this contest should bring cookies to the Church of Christ basement (on Powell Street) between 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Friday, June 19th, 2026. An entry form will be filled out for each person, with a number given to each entry. No one entering an exhibit will be present at the time of judging. No exhibit will be accepted after 11:00 a.m. ALL cookie entries—winners or non-winners—MUST pick up their entries between 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. the same day (Friday, June 19th) at the Church of Christ. Any cookies that are not picked up by this time will not be the responsibility of the West Virginia State Folk Festival. None of the cookies can be refrigerated. Any cookies that are not picked up by 1:30 p.m. will not be the responsibility of the West Virginia State Folk Festival. Once the judging has been completed, a list of winners will be posted at the Country Store.

 

RULES: FIVE (5) cookies are required for each entry. ALL cookies must be homemade (from scratch). All cookies should be on a sturdy plate and wrapped with clear wrap or placed in a clear baggie for easy viewing and tasting. Do NOT place the name of the cookie or your name on the cookie plate. The Assistant will fill out a registration form containing your name, address, phone number, name of cookie, and give the entry a number.

Class I-----Plain Cookies

These cookies should not contain any nuts, berries, fruits, chunks, chocolate, etc. (ex: Sugar Cookies)

 

Class II----Fruit Cookies

These cookies may contain dried fruit or preserves. (ex: Oatmeal Raisin or filled cookies)

 

Class III---Nut Cookies

These cookies may contain, but not limited to, any type of nuts. (ex: Walnut cookies)

Class IV---Iced Cookies

These cookies may be any variety or have any kind of ingredients.

Class V --- Chocolate Chip Cookies

These cookies should ONLY contain chocolate chips. 

Judging:

  1. Judges will base their decisions on the Classes listed above.

  2. Judges will taste each entry and follow the rules/check list given to them prior to judging.

  3. Judges will have a score sheet, based upon a 50-point scale. The highest score will secure the top award in each Class.

  4. The winner from each Class, will receive a medallion and special prize. Second and third place winners will receive a ribbon.

  5. Grand Prize Award: The Judges will select one entry with the highest score. If a tie occurs, the judges will re-evaluate each entry involved in the tie, by checking the scores and once again tasting each exhibit. The winner will receive medallion and a special prize.

JAM & JELLY CONTEST---2026

RULES: Two (2) jars are required for each entry. Half pint or pint jars must be exhibited in a brand name jar (Mason, Ball, Kerr, etc.). No jar will be judged that is not a brand name jar. Jars should be clean and sealed with a non-rusty ring. Any person entering the contest should NOT place their name on the jam/jelly/butter jar. Upon entering the exhibit, the Director or Assistant will fill out a form containing the exhibitor’s name, address, phone number, and type of jelly/jam/butters.

Jelly

1. Any type of berry (ex: strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, etc.)

2. Any type of fruit (ex: pear, apple, crabapple, etc.)

 

Jam

3. Any type of berry jam/preserve (ex: strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, etc.)

4. Any type of fruit jam/preserve (ex: pear, apple, crabapple, etc.)

 

Butters

5. Any type of butter (ex: apple butter, pear butter, etc.)

6. Most unique flavored jelly, jam, or butter

 

Judging:

  1. Judges will base their decisions on the categories listed above.

  2. Judges will taste each entry and follow the rules/check list given to them prior to judging.

  3. Judges will have a score sheet, based upon a 50-point scale. The highest score will secure the top award in each category.

  5. Grand Prize Award: The Judges will select only one jam/jelly/butter with the highest score. If a tie occurs, the judges will re-evaluate each jar by checking the scores and once again tasting each exhibit involved in the tie. The winner will receive a medallion and an appropriate prize.

 

Pepperoni Roll Contest - 2025

Dear Pepperoni Roll Enthusiast!

We are looking for competitors and sponsors for the fourth annual West Virginia State Pepperoni Roll Championship that will be held during West Virginia State Folk Festival! Competitors will bring six pepperoni rolls for a blind judging competition (all six rolls must fit in a 9x9 take-out tray), and another two dozen+ individually wrapped rolls to sell to the public. The registration fee is a donation of $25. the proceeds from the competition fee and sale of pepperoni rolls will go toward the cost of hosting the event this year and for years to come. 

 

Individuals and businesses are invited to participate with their favorite traditional pepperoni roll recipe.  

Prizes will once again include beautifully, locally, handcrafted plaques and cutting boards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, plus inclusion in a press release to be shard state-wide.  

If you don't want to enter rolls but would like to participate as a judge or event sponsor, please send the registration form with a note of your interest.

Pie Baking Contest Rules

container, which includes a cover. Contestants may enter only one (1) pie per class. The name of the contestant and pie should not appear on the item, but will be given to the Director when entering the pie.
